It's a Victor 1640 Taiwan not a 1440 Practical Machinist

I've been looking to upgrade my Clausing 4900 10" lathe, so I went to see a Victor 1440 today but it turns out to be a Victor 1640 made in Taiwan. Quite dirty and a bit of rust but everything seemed to work fine. Opened the gearhead cover all the gears looked good and had the right amount of oil. The feed gear box had no oil in it.I guess it depends on the vintage, etc., as things are always changing. Just because Victors were made in Taiwan at one time, there's no telling exactly where anything is made anymore. They also use the Fortune brand name. That said, however, the machines made by Victor Taichung have been well regarded for a long time.How are the quality of VICTOR lathes versus Grizzly, etc.

You might check out Standard Modern lathes, which I think are made in Canada. South Bend is back in business, albeit only as a brand name. See southbendlathe. Clausing Metosa, Clausing Colchester, Republic Lagun or Victor lathes are all decent and heavily constructed. I have run Victors, quite a few over They are really built with some meat on them, for the heavier cuts but also great for lighter cuts too. In that price range, it is going to be one of the best deals that you can get. I used a victor 1630(1977 model) for 9 years. It was a very good lathe. I did break the brake band once.but I just took it off and welded it back together. The retainer came off it. I now have a victor 1640b that isn't nearly as nice of a lathe. I got the thing pretty abused and it will never be what I want it to be.I thank I may know what your problem is . I have seen it more than once on the older Blue gray victor lathes. Their is a speed range in the middle of the selector range,that can go out. The problem being is that range had a shaft with a very small gear made on the shaft that is known to strip the teeth off.General older victor 1660 Practical Machinist Largest

Hardinge HLV-EM copies- Sharp, Victor, Cyclomatic all the same

I think Victor stopped making manual lathes some time ago. I remember a lot of the HLVH copies were made by "Fair Friend", which marketed some under the Feeler name. But like most Taiwan machine tool manufacturers, they moved exclusively into cnc between ten and twenty years ago. Their company timeline says they went all CNC in 1989.
