Simtars — the Safety in Mines Testing and Research Station — was established in 1983 by the Queensland Government following the tragedies of the Box Flat Colliery and Kianga No 1 Colliery underground mine explosions. We started operations in 1986, and commissioned our purpose-built analytical and research facilities at Redbank, Collingwood Park mine subsidence. Part of the Collingwood Park suburb is underlain by 2 decommissioned underground coal mines Westfalen Number 3 and New Redbank collieries. Two subsidence events in December 1988 and April 2008 resulted in surface movement and damage to houses in the suburb.
